All The Right Links in All The RIght Places

This week while reading “Social Media Marketing”, I learned a lot about the social media platform, LinkedIn. I am fairly new to LinkedIn for school and future internship/job purposes. I haven’t dived into it yet, so it was very informational to read about. As of right now, all I do on LinkedIn is post articles about things certain things I have read about in the news. I don’t have very many connections as of right now, but I plan to get more the longer I am on it, the more I interact on it, and the more people I have the opportunity to meet and interact with.

One major difference between LinkedIn and other social media platforms is that it is more professional and serious. You won’t be on LinkedIn and see someone posting pictures of their new puppy or the new shoes they got for a steal at some trendy new boutique. This is the place where people market themselves in their field of work so they can better further their career. Most all of the people on LinkedIn are employees of business and companies. There are no real business dedicated pages, like you might see on Instagram or Facebook. I think that having LinkedIn be very professional and for these types of services only is good because I know I would like to keep my personal and professional profiles separate. Even on Facebook, you can have a business page, but the other people interacting with that page may not be professional and the type of people you are wishing to interact with to further your career.

Another interesting aspect of LinkedIn is that it is the type of platform where you would send a request to connect with someone you may have just met or maybe not even have met. If you have ever had any connection with this person and they would be beneficial to have as a connection on LinkedIn, you should shoot them a request. On a platform, such as Facebook, you may be more uncertain of letting anyone be your friend for private and protective reasons. I think that this is kind of weird, but also a good idea. I feel like I would need a really good connection with someone before sending them a request to connect. That is just the type of person I am.

What is really nice about LinkedIn is that is will serve as a resume for you right online. Anyone who connects with you can go to your profile and see all of your accomplishments, credentials, and etc. You can make your profile easy to find too if you use the right keywords when setting up your profile. Make sure you use words that will help the people you want to find your profile find it. This is nice because if you make a connection with someone who could potentially give you job, they can go through your profile and already get a sense of what type of person you are and some of the things you have done. It is very convenient.
