Halfway There
We are at the point in the first semester here at Ohio
Northern where there is about 6 weeks or so left of school. All I can say is
thank goodness. Coming into this semester, I had so many hopes, goals to
accomplish, organizations to join, and fun to have. At the halfway point in
which we are at, I can tell you that I would not have imagined that this is how
my first semester back to school would have gone.
Some good
things that have happened this semester are that I got a job on campus. I
really like my job. I work at the call center where I call alumni and ask if
they would like to give to our Northern Fund here on campus. It helps students receive
aid and scholarships to attend the university. I only have to work two shifts a
week, it is the highest paying job on campus for students, and I am able to get
a lot of homework done while I am at work.
Another good
thing that happened this year is that I get to live in an awesome apartment with
one of my best friends. We are only sophomores, so we shouldn’t have gotten to
stay here because it mostly houses juniors and seniors, but when we went to put
in our housing forms last semester, mine would not submit. I got ahold of residence
life, and they ended up having to do it all manually for us. This resulted in
us getting to pick where we lived. Obviously, we chose the nicest place on
campus.
I came to
Ohio Northern as a transfer student in the spring semester of 2018. I didn’t
join any clubs or organizations because it was the second semester, and
everything had already been going on for a whole semester. I went that semester
feeling like I didn’t really have any friends or have anything to do other than
homework. This semester, I wanted to really get involved, which I thought would
also help me make more friends. I wanted to tryout for one of the choirs on
campus, but all of the practices interfered with my class schedule. That was a
huge bummer because I love to sing, and I was in the choir at my previous
university.
A few of my friends were planning on rushing a
sorority. I decided to rush as well because I thought it would be fun. Long
story short, I got my second choice, which really bummed me out. I accepted
anyways because I liked the girls and some of my other friends got in that one as
well. Long story short, I dropped out about a week later for reasons I won’t go
into. It’s kind of sad now because all my other friends are getting to do this
and I am not a part of it.
I also wanted to do something athletic
to stay in shape. I played three different sports in high school, and I really
missed it. I tried out for the club volleyball team on campus. I knew when I tried
out that I didn’t play to the best of my ability. I was still hopeful, though,
but in the end, I got cut. It was kind of crushing to me just because I have always
done well at sports. I got over it though.
I am still hopeful for the rest of
the school year. I joined APO (Alpha Phi Omega), a service fraternity on
campus. I think it will be fun. I am planning on trying out for the choir again
in the spring. I also want to rush a sorority again next fall. Things can
always get better, and some things will just kick you in the rear. You can’t
let one bad thing or multiple and things ruin whatever else is left waiting for
you that you just haven’t had the opportunity to experience yet.
Yes! Although things may not be exactly how you want them to be, you can’t let that hold you back. Keep working hard and keep your head up.
