Ho Ho No

This week, I read an interesting article that somewhat broke my heart. “Baby It’s Cold Outside” has been banned from being played on a radio station in Cleveland, Ohio. Recently, the song has been receiving backlash due to the fact the lyrics are controversial when it comes to consent. Another touchy area that the song seems to aggravate people is about the #MeToo movement that has been sweeping across the nation. The argument is that the song is attributing to the issue of sexual consent not meaning anything, but not everyone is in agreeance with this idea.

The radio station in Cleveland made the decision to pull the song from their station, but following their decision, they decided to create a Facebook poll asking their followers whether they wanted the song to be played on their station or not and the results showed that 94% of people voted yes that the song should remain on the radio for the upcoming holiday season.

The lyrics are the issue and people have decided to interpret in ways that were not necessarily intentional and meant to mean what people are deciding to say they are about. “Say what’s in this drink” is a lyric from the song and people have come to interpret this lyric as the drink the woman is speaking of has been drugged to get her to stay. Others are saying that she wants to leave but also wants to stay. She is nervous, though, about what others will think about her if she stays. In the end, they say she has made the choice to stay because it is cold outside.

This probably cost the radio station some listeners, but other than that it is just a radio station. This decision probably won’t make a detrimental impact on their business. I personally think that they should have just left the song on the station. If you don’t like the song, there are plenty of other radio stations playing more suitable Christmas songs for you to listen to. Happy Holidays!

  1. I do believe "Baby It's Cold Outside" has a few somewhat sketchy lyrics, but I agree with you, it's all a matter of interpretation. Despite the questionable lyrics, this is one of my favorite Christmas songs. It is an actual deal breaker if a guy won't sing the male half of this song with me. Merry Christmas!
